STATEMENT, MARCH 2011 My work is driven by an interest in color interactions, and the sensations that result from visually absorbing them. I am currently exploring an imagined atmosphere inhabited by deeply-hued bands of light. As color realities in the form of light are so different from that of paint, I look for unusual or surprising colors that appear to be convincing mixtures of their neighbors. It is very exciting to me when a band of violet light intersects with a band of red-orange light and the mixture is a bright green, and one's brain accepts it as a transparency, when it is actually neighboring areas of opaque paint. The forms I use are intuitive shapes that develop in the painting process. These forms give me a way to control the number of times colors mix, and locate areas of hot-ness or contrast, allowing me to create rhythm and balance within a sometimes tumultuous situation. I find deep satisfaction in the way that these forms imply typography, symbols, grafitti, and other forms of visual expression.
